Archive for Game Design

December rolls along and I realize I have not saved up nearly enough money to buy my friends and families Christmas gifts. (Curse you unemployment!) Thought I’m sure my friends miss my usual economy class gifts of soaps, chocolates or movie tickets, I really hope they enjoyed my “hand-made” gifts better.

Another UI practice for me. Graphics and icons by me. 3D background by Visual Paradox.
These are mockups, not a real game. However, I was playing the Battlestar Galactica board game before designing these and took much of the game mechanics as inspiration. Note to self: Learn how to draw spaceships.

I’m making a sincere effort to get back into UI Art design. These are mockups, and not a real game. The 3D art is by Brandon Campbell. Icons and HUD element are by me. The art inspiration for this game is Warhammer 40k & Dawn of War.

These are the cards that Manuell and I have completed for Card Adventure’s trading card game. I didn’t black out the text this time as this version of cards will not be used. Actually the TCG concept is being shelved for now due to licensing issues from Wizards of the Coast. Did you know there is a patent on collectible card games? Regardless, there is still going to be cards (as the company is called Card Adventures) but the focus will be changing to Online. I love card games, but I love Online games even more, so I am not too disappointed that the TCG has been shelved.

Style #2 was chosen, thank you to the Bootup Labs kids for filling out the survey. (And parents for allowing them to participate!) Here is the first character, China’s Monkey King. Many many many more card art to come.

The 3rd and final art set for Card Adventures. I stayed up late today to get it done so that my bosses (Sean’s kids) can evaluate their choices this weekend. I’m not sure which set I personally favor. I think the first set, maybe.

Style 2 is based on the chibi (or super-deformed) style of anime.

1 of 3 character styles for Card Adventures. This style is based on the original concept art with a more anime influence. I’m trying to achieve a fusion style – just the right mix of west and east. I also want to make sure that I stick to a style that is appropriate for the game’s 4 to 12 year old demographic.

I’m back to working on Card Adventures. Last Fall this was a project that was on high on my priority list, but it got shelved in favor of Gnomes Homes and 2nd Syndicate. My work for Gnomes Homes and 2nd Syndicate is done (for now), so Card Adventures is back on top. Card Adventures is in early stages of development. I just recently completed the design document for the online portal. It’s all confidential thought so I can’t show it here!

TCG Prototype

The top right corner shows 3 different prototypes each with it’s own game mechanic. To get into the mood of designing a TCG I have played many many (many!) hours of Magic Cards, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Free Realms. In fact, I think I’m a little bit addicted.. Anyways blogging about game development is not very exciting, as I can’t actually show anything. But here are some concept art.
